Cataldo Ambulance Service recently
donated a 2001 Ford Excursion sport-utility vehicle to the city of
Melrose, which will be used by Melrose Fire Department shift commanders,
according to officials at City Hall.
The vehicle, which has 100,000
miles on it and was used by Cataldo field supervisors, will allow
shift commanders to respond to fire emergencies, according to Melrose
Fire Chief John O’Brien.
“The shift commanders right now don’t
have a vehicle,” O’Brien said. “They ride with
one of the engines or a brush truck … G&T Auto Body
on Tremont Street painted [the donated truck] no charge to the city,
which was a huge savings. We’re excited about it. Times are
tight.”
Dennis Cataldo, vice president of the Somerville-based
company, said Cataldo routinely donates older vehicles to communities
such as Saugus and Malden and has also donated ambulances to third
world countries.
We do donate equipment, especially if they’re
the type of vehicles that don’t have a lot of resale value
to them, given that they’ve been outfitted for emergency type
use,” Cataldo said.
